The United Nations has drawn up the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enhance global development in a sustainable manner. More and more nations and companies are working towards these goals. PALFINGER also wants to define its potential impact on sustainable development, so the final selection of SDGs was made in 2017.
THE 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)
In September 2015, in the course of the United Nations summit “Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development“, 193 UN states agreed on 17 common sustainable development goals. These are designed to counteract the most important problems of our time, promote human well-being and protect the environment. They are also the answer to the unsatisfactory development of the Rio action plans and Kyoto Protocol.
The targets adopted by the United Nations are aimed at the international community of states. It is equally called upon – depending on its capacities – to contribute to achieving the SDGs. The objectives lay a foundation stone for actively working to improve the situation of people and the environment by 2030.
The SDGs are based on the idea of a new global partnership, which will replace the division into aiding and assisted countries, and the idea of shared responsibility for people and the planet. Another major difference to the previous targets – the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) – is the key role of companies. Corporate responsibility is seen as the most important economic force. This is essential to reach the SDGs.

Like many other nations and companies, PALFINGER wants to make a contribution to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
PALFINGERs CONTRIBUTION TO THE SDGS
Living sustainability is our responsibility for tomorrow. As a growing family-owned company, PALFINGER has been dealing with sustainability topics since 2004. The SDGs are dealt with in four sustainability areas. These sustainability areas consist of responsible employer, eco-efficiency in production, sustainable products and fair business. PALFINGER sets itself the goal of contributing to sustainable development and thus also the goal of supporting the SDGs with its business activities.
In a multi-stage process, the direct and indirect impacts of PALFINGER’s actions on the 17 SDGs were discussed. The essential economic, social, ecological and ethical aspects were decisive in this regard.
In a first internal analysis, the impacts of the major sustainability topics were examined in 2016. It went one step further in 2017: the analysis was expanded and extended to include all other sustainability topics (total of 38). In the course of the stakeholder survey 2017, PALFINGER’s stakeholder (e.g. customers, suppliers, management etc.) were asked to submit their classification of the most important development goals.
These further steps confirmed the SDGs on which PALFINGER has a direct or indirect impact from the initial analysis of 2016, with the top 13 sustainability topics of PALFINGER having a direct impact on 9 Sustainable Development Goals. The most important impacts of PALFINGER relate primarily to 5 SDGs, which will also influence the strategic orientation of our sustainability management in the future. It is important for us to make a contribution to global sustainable development.
Top 5 SDGs PALFINGER has an influence on
SDG 12: RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
PALFINGER assumes responsibility through the efficient use of raw materials. The reduction of energy and hazardous waste is also an important aspect of the entire value-added chain. We provide lifting solutions with efficient, low-operating and low-noise products that meet the latest research findings and market requirements.
SDG 13: CLIMATE ACTION
PALFINGER is committed to climate protection and strives for the continuous optimization of energy consumption and internal transport caused by production activities and the use of products. This reduces costs and emissions. Concrete targets and measures for energy consumption and CO2 pollution contribute to climate protection. According to regional possibilities, buildings and production processes should be highly efficient.
SDG 8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
PALFINGER attaches great importance to the future viability of its business model and thus contributes to economic growth. Relevant trends are actively pursued and integrated. Equally important is to ensure an attractive job with a lived corporate culture and corporate values. This includes legal and ethical standards as well as training opportunities for our employees.
SDG 9: INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
PALFINGER strives to always align its business model with the latest trends and therefore invests in research and development. PALFINGER uses innovations to improve production processes and the safety of its products. Another focus is the efficient handling of raw materials such as steel or aluminum.
SDG 10: REDUCED INEQUALITIES
We see compliance with legal and ethical standards as a social obligation. The overfulfilment of regional standards makes us an attractive employer. Ethically correct conduct is the basis for this: laws are obeyed, taxes are transparent and paid correctly and corruption is counteracted. Further priorities will be set with a view to promoting diversity and equal opportunities, fair working conditions, modern workplaces and fair remuneration.
A blog series on these 5 SDGs will give an even deeper insight into PALFINGER’s sphere of influence. The first SDG will be presented at the end of March.
