. Industry Pioneers brought together the brightest minds to unlock the potential of new technologies that drive the fourth industrial revolution and shape the future of intelligent manufacturing. In addition to three other corporates, PALFINGER put an Use Case out of production. Driven by a challenge that the Welding Department from PALFINGER has been facing over the last years, the following Use Case was developed and gave a perfect possibility to tackle it through an open-innovation approach at the hackathon.
„Intelligent Welding Assistance System: Knowledge management system to guide the welders and welding supervisors through the process at the right time on the job”
As lot-sizes (batch size) are decreasing and the individualization of our products and components are rising, welders have to handle more and more complex tasks. On the one hand this requires a very high skilled staff, on the other hand an assistance system will have a high impact on productivity and essential to keep up our high quality standards.
How the Hackathon Process went down
In total, 20 globally pre-selected start-ups came together to work on the challenges posed by four different industry partners. Five start-ups with in total 20 hackers from Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, Bulgaria and Lithuania put all their effort together to “hack” the Use Case of PALFINGER. During the whole Developing time, the start-ups were mentored by PALFINGER experts. The interdisciplinary team was set together from the CCF Lengau, Corporate Welding Department, Corporate PALFINGER Production System, our equipment supplier Fronius and PALFINGER 21st.
Based on the on-site welding machine and a welding simulation tool provided by Fronius, the start-ups got a good feel for the need and were able to understand the processes and challenges faced by the welders
.
The atmosphere was very positive and inspiring. Not only due to the fantastic location – the old tabacco factory with its unique flair, but also due to the lively exchange between our PALFINGER mentors and the start-up teams.
What the Winner got as an Award
Itizzimo from Würzburg Germany, the winner of the PALFINGER Hackathon Challenge got a Business Modell Challenge with PALFINGER Executives. In addition to that, they will visit the PALFINGER World followed by a discussion about a possible follow-up project to bring the developed solution into a productive environment.
Backstage
With the innovation consultancy Pioneers Discover we had an experienced and well-known partner in the start-up industry. In close cooperation with PALFINGER search fields were defined for the start-up search.
For this purpose, a selection list of startups with an application-oriented technology focus was created during Europe-wide scouting from the Pioneer internal database. In subsequent interviews between Pioneers Discover and the individual StartUps, the suitability of the teams for the use case developed by PALFINGER was determined.
The infrastructure for this event was provided by the startup campus factory300. It is located in the old tobacco factory Linz, a meeting place for startups, founders, investors and innovative corporates. factory300 is part of the Business Angel network startup300, which is one of the most active and largest business angel networks with 140 investors and more than 40 Startups.
