PALFINGER and the Sustainable Development Goals

PALFINGER and the Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations has drawn up the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enhance global development in a sustainable way. More and more nations and companies are working towards these goals. PALFINGER thus wants to define its potential impact on sustainable development, so the final selection of SDGs was made in 2017.

THE 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)

In September 2015, in the course of the United Nations summit “Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development”, 193 UN states agreed on 17 common sustainable development goals. These are designed to counteract the most important problems of our time, promote human well-being and protect the environment. They are therefore the answer to the unsatisfactory development of the Rio Action Plans and Kyoto Protocol.

The targets adopted by the United Nations are aimed at the international community of states. It is kindly called upon – depending on its capabilities – to contribute to the SDGs. The objectives lay a foundation stone by 2030.

The SDGs are based on the idea of a new global partnership, which wants to replace the division into aiding and assisting countries, and the idea of shared responsibility for people and the planet. Another major difference to the previous targets – the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – is the key role of companies. Corporate responsibility is seen as the most important economic force. This is essential to reach the SDGs.

PALFINGER’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SDGS

Living sustainability is our responsibility for tomorrow. As a growing family-owned company, PALFINGER has been dealing with sustainability topics since 2004. The SDGs are dealt with in four sustainability areas. These sustainability areas consist of responsible employer, eco-efficiency in production, sustainable products and fair business. PALFINGER sets itself the goal of contributing to sustainable development and hence the goal of supporting the SDGs with its business activities.

The procedure

In a multi-stage process, the direct and indirect impacts of PALFINGER’s actions on the 17 SDGs were discussed. The essential economic, social, ecological and ethical aspects were decisive in this regard.

It was one step further in 2017: the analysis was expanded and extended to include all other sustainability topics (total of 38).

In the course of the stakeholder survey 2017, PALFINGER’s stakeholders (eg customers, suppliers, management, etc.) were asked to submit their classification of the most important development goals.

These further steps confirmed the SDGs on which PALFINGER has a direct or indirect impact from the initial analysis of 2016, with the top 13 Sustainability Development Goals. The most important impacts of PALFINGER relate primarily to 5 SDGs, which means that they are influencing the strategic orientation of our sustainability management in the future. It is important to make a contribution to global sustainable development.
