On today’s world day, we would like to turn our attention to a still urgent topic: child labor. Child labor has always existed all around the world.
What is child labor and how does it affect our present world?
According to the international definition of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the following forms of child labor should be abolished and recognized to be exploitative: “Work of children under 13 years, slavery, guilt and all forms of forced labor, child prosecution and pornography, illegal activities, such as drug smuggling, and work that jeopardizes health, safety or morality.”
It is assumed that today 168 million children are employed worldwide. And around 51% of these children are employed in hazardous areas
. Agriculture continues to be the leading sector. But other sectors such as mining, manufacturing and tourism are also of great relevance. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, assures the protection against economic exploitation. In 2002, an international anniversary was held with the first World Day against Child Labor. It takes place annually on June 12th.
